Customer Rating: Summary: Great starter book for getting to work from home Comment: Whether your employer is willing to allow it or you want to venture out on your own, this is an excellent step by step introduction on what you can do and would do if you got to work from home.
The book introduces the concept and gives you quick hitting facts and tidbits of information on how it can save your company money and you in particular a whole lot of time. The book discusses the stress of long commutes and how even working from home just one day a week, can go a long way to improving our outlook on life.
Being one who currently has the luxury to work from home every day as a contractor recruiter, I really wished I had seen this book earlier. It has check lists and guidelines for what you need in your office, so you don't have to forget things, also, if you go freelance, it guides you on what to charge for, what going rates for billing could be and paperwork you will need for agreements with clients.
Additionally, the book allows you to explore the opportunities to move on from a job that may not allow you work from home, in this economy, at least planning for such an occurence is really a good idea. In fact, exploring your skills and how they may be good for work from home possibilities is always a good idea, even if just to do some additional pickup work.
Very simple to read and not very time consuming, this is a great introduction with tools and tips to help you along the way. I will add other books from NOLO in the near future that match my needs in my work.
Customer Rating: Summary: Not even worth the reduces Amazon price frankly Comment: This is a timely book--very timely in that some of the statistical data and such will probably become dated before too long. The resources are good but even websites can come and go so anyone who is serious about working from home needs to hurry to get a copy before the information loses its immediate relevance.
With that said, there's more than enough good stuff here to almost justify the price. The book by arguing for the many reasons someone might want to work from home without glossing over the reality of it. Not everyone is able to work from home because some people simply prefer the interaction of others, want to get away from the house even if it means facing rush hour traffic, or simply have careers that are not conducive to working from home. And those who may sincerely want to do so are not necessarily equipped to do so in other ways--lacking the technology or maybe even the discipline to do so.
Being home all day with the kids may sound better than having to leave every morning for the office but when you have to be on a conference call you'll still need childcare.
This book does a good job of presenting the arguments both for and against working from home before addressing how to make it happen. No need to work out a way to approach your boss about working from home if after reading the first couple of chapters you realize that you can't (because your professional role won't allow it) or shouldn't (because you really don't have the right home or personal context to do so).
The book devotes one chapter to approaching your current employer with an argument for telecommuting before moving onto another chapter where finding a job that is telecommuting friendly is offered, including some warnings about work from home scams. The last few chapters are devoted to more practical advice regarding freelancing including an overview regarding how to file taxes along with suggested resources if you need more information.
This is a good book. Is it worth $19.99? No. At fewer than 200 pages you're paying too much for not enough information. The same websites are mentioned more than once between chapters if not within the same chapter. If you can spare a couple of hours, go to your local bookstore, buy a cup of coffee and read it while taking notes. It won't take you more than two hours to read this cover to cover and get a list of the resources you may want/need. Or borrow it from the library. But it is not worth the hefty price and that is a shame because it's not a bad book really just not very thorough.
Customer Rating: Summary: Targeted Mostly to Freelancers Comment: My wife is a stay-at-home mom with a graduate degree, and she wanted to find a way to work from home. This book was just what she was looking for to help her with that endeavor. The first few chapters help the reader decide whether the target job can be managed from home and how.
There are some good tips the author gives on how to speak to your employer about working from home and how you can transform your personal reasons into business reasons and prepares you on handling any objections; the book even includes a complete sample proposal on the matter.
The book also has a good section on locating and retaining a work-at-home job and how to identify legitimate jobs from scams.
The only reason I'm giving it a four stars is because it is fairly shallow focusing mostly on the basics that you need to know.
Customer Rating: Summary: Great little book to get you started thinking about working from home Comment: This little book was written for those who are interested in working from home, especially those who have a job which they think they might be able to work from home. . . . only if their boss will let them. ;-) I already work from home, so though this book really wasn't written for me, I still got some nice hints out of it. It's filled with lots of little snapshots, tidbits of information and more. . . . so it's not boring.
Working from home always sounds like this "great thing", but it's not for everyone. I think if you pay close attention to this book, and have a good "heart-to-heart" with yourself, then you'll know if working from home is right for you. Believe me, it's not all watching soap operas, shopping, and doing your laundry! I think that's what this book tries to convey. When you work from home. . . you're ALWAYS HOME!
Though the book gives some ideas about where to find some work-from-home jobs, it's also very wise to say that the easiest job to find is the one you're at now, so if you can make working from home part of your current job, that's best. Perhaps trying it for only a few days per week at first, and then go from there.
The back sections have some good information about taxes, what you're going to need to get started, and more.
Customer Rating: Summary: Great informational guide for the times. Comment: In this day and age where jobs are are iffy at best, this nice little nifty guide to working at home is quite handy for times such as this. Chock full with information on working at home, whether for yourself or as an outside contractor for companies, even if you are working and or perhaps looking for a change, this guide is for you. Not too long and easy to refer to again.
