Summary: I couldn't agree more..
Comment: I totally agree with the reviewer who posted the "Suppose you knew nothng whatever about baseball" review. This is just bits and pieces cribbed from articles or real books about recruiting, but without any serious knowledge of the subject.

The two outstanding books recommended in that review by J. Goldstein contain genuine in-depth material and are written by extremely well-credentialed industry authorities of long standing. Buy them; this one is glib surface-only junk of little benefit except to the publisher.

Summary: Suppose you knew nothng whatever about baseball....
Comment: Suppose you knew nothing whatever about baseball, but had some passing familarity with other sports. Then suppose you read a few articles and brief booklets about baseball, and decided to write your own book entitled "How To Manage a Big League Ball Club". How effective would that book be? Probably as effective as this hodgepodge of cribbed material written without any in-depth understanding of the subject.

Any person considering (or seeking to expand their knowledge of) Executive Search would be well advised to avoid this shallow book. I have 15 years of successful search experience, and I can tell you that there only two books written by serious qualified practitioners. Search and Placement! A Handbook for Success, by Larry Nobles and Steven M. Finkel is the most comprehensive foundational book, and should be read first. The 2008 edition of Breakthrough! Exploding the Production of Experienced Recruiters by Steven M. Finkel is the second far more in-depth book, but requires some industry knowledge to fully comprehend, which is why the Nobles/Finkel book is first. Highlight these books; don't just "read" them!

These two serious books will give a person a REAL foundation and understanding of executive search, far more than the poor information in the above foolish book. I do NOT agree that someone can't start and run his own recruiting firm. But it takes serious in-depth sophisticated material to do it, not junk info. See the recommended books, and buy them.

Summary: Bad Idea...
Comment: Once again, if you do not have at least 5 years experience as an executive recruiter do not even think about it. If you are totally new to the industry I suggest going with a franchise.

Summary: A strong Primer for investigating a recruiting business
Comment: As a relatively new recruiter (roughly 8 years in the business), I found this book to be great. I have to say that after being in the business and making a significant number of placements in those years - I was in tune already with much of what the book brought to the table, but that said, I consider most of the information to be SPOT ON and it would have gotten me up to speed more quickly as well - particularly the part about how tough the business can be!

I think this book does a good job of showing both the Pro's and Con's of the business and it really helps you to evaluate yourself and hopefully determine how well this type of business might suit you.

Keep in mind that this is not an all inclusive book on recruiting, but it is the best one I have seen for someone to use in evaluating how viable they might be for a recruiting job. I plan to have future potential recruiters looking to work for me - read this book first (particularly if they have not recruited before).

Summary: A solid overview of the industry!
Comment: Start Your Own Executive Recruiting Service provides anyone interested in starting a search firm with a good overview of the industry's basics. This book provides practical information and realistically sets expectations. It's not a complete "how-to", there are gaps that will be filled with experience and from other sources but it's a good part of the research and due diligence that must be done before starting your own company - whether you're an experienced recruiter or looking for a career changed. (I have over 15 years in the recruiting industry - the last 7 as the owner of a mid-sized IT staffing firm with a national client-base providing both staff augmentation and permanent placement.)
